Red Navigation Lights Pass CFR 33 Light Test

Navigation lights play a critical role in ensuring the safe passage of marine traffic beneath both fixed-span and movable bridges around the world. In the United States, the most widely referenced standard for these lights is outlined in the U.S. Coast Guard’s 33 CFR, Subsection 118. While this regulation mandates that navigation lights must be visible against background lighting from a distance of at least 2,000 yards, it does not require candela verification testing or specify lens and bulb colors. The only stipulation is that the correct light color must be displayed from sunset to sunrise and during periods of low visibility.

To go beyond these baseline requirements and deliver added assurance to our clients, B&B Roadway voluntarily submitted our red navigation light lenses and bulbs to Intertek’s ETL Certification Program—a recognized testing and certification authority for infrastructure lighting. The result: three of our lens models, paired with two standard bulb types, passed ETL testing with success, reinforcing our commitment to safety, performance, and compliance.
